Jacaranda Healthcare has this week launched Papua New Guinea’s first electronic hospital information system to aid access of data between multiple hospital departments.

Director Ken Blaikie says through the vision of the Directors of the Port Moresby Private Specialist Medical Centre, a major step forward has been taken for health management in PNG.

The system is expected to deliver significant improvements in the coordination of general medical services, specialist medical consultations, pharmacy, radiology, pathology, dental, obstetrics, minor surgery and other services within the centre.

“This will increase patient care standards and improve the efficient use of resources within the Centre,” Blaikie says.

“The system will also allow virtually unlimited expansion of services and users, future-proofing the use and access to vital health information,” he says.

“Despite some of the staff having had no previous experience with computer systems, the enthusiasm and motivation of all involved has been inspiring.”

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Opening the floodgates for further opportunities in the healthcare industry, Blaikie and fellow Jacaranda Health Care Director Sean Smith have big plans for the future.

After securing its first international client in PNG, the Brisbane-based business is now in final negotiations on several other similar projects in both Australia and South East Asia.

Blaikie says the next major project is expected to target aged and community care.

“We currently have some exciting projects in the wings in countries such as Singapore,” he says.

“The success of the Papua New Guinea project will demonstrate that there is now a cost effective, proven and comprehensive Hospital Information System solution which perfectly suits the needs of Australia’s rural and remote healthcare providers.”
