March 10, 2010Member for Bulimba Di Farmer has committed herself to ensuring the long term growth of manufacturing in the riverside Brisbane electorate.
Farmer made the pledge at a ceremony this week to sign a Charter for Australian Manufacturing at local heavy engineering firm,
Forgacs, which employs around 90 full‐time workers.
She says heavy manufacturing is a significant part of the 3,600 small to medium enterprises operating in her Bulimba electorate.
The Charter has been created by the
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) as part of its ‘Manufacturing Matters’ campaign to promote the growth of local manufacturing.
AMWU Secretary Andrew Dettmer met with Member for Bulimba Di Farmer and Forgacs general manager Kevin Stanton to sign the Charter at the company’s Thynne Road headquarters on March 8.
“Manufacturing is a vital industry for all Queenslanders and is particularly important to the Bulimba region,” Dettmer says.
“As the union representing manufacturing workers, we’re committed to continuing to boost the industry and our Manufacturing Matters campaign is part of that commitment,” he says.
“That’s why we’re seeking out representatives like Ms Farmer to help us spread the word of Queensland manufacturing.”
Farmer pledged to champion manufacturing in the Bulimba electorate.
“By signing this Charter, I am personally committed to working with your company and your union,” she told workers and company management at a signing ceremony.
She also promised to discuss the Charter with the Premier and Treasurer, to ensure Queensland suppliers, particularly Forgacs, were considered first for government contracts.
Headquartered in NSW, Forgacs is one of Australia’s leading ship repair, ship construction and engineering companies.
