October 7, 2009Bob Bryan, one of just 12 inductees in the inaugural
Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame, will deliver the keynote speech to the prestigious 2009
Queensland 400 Awards Gala Dinner on Friday, October 30.
From a fairly normal geological background, Bob Bryan’s entrepreneurial career really started in his late forties with his promotion of the first management buyout in the resources sector in Australia. This resulted in the float of Pan Australian Mining in 1983 and the development of the Mt Leyshon gold mine.
From the proceeds of selling out of Pan Australian Mining, in 1989 Bryan founded his property group that has morphed into the Australian Property Growth Fund, now one of Queensland’s largest unlisted property companies.
Bryan returned to the mining scene in 1996 with the back-door listing of Pan Australian Resources – now known as PanAust. This company is now a major copper and gold producer in Laos.
As a final hurrah, Bryan and friends floated the Queensland Gas Company in 2000 to exploit the coal seam gas prospects of the Surat Basin in Queensland. The BG Group took out QGC for $5.6 billion cash in 2008.
Bryan has now stepped down from all mining company positions, but continues to be actively involved in his private property group.
However, he retains a keen interest in the resources sector, and is an Honorary Life Member of the Queensland Resources Council.
Bryan has had a life long interest in education and some 10 years ago, helped establish the Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre within the University of Queensland. More recently, he set up The Bryan Foundation to help address the raft of health and educational issues that affect far too many of our communities across Australia.
Last month, he was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame for a lifetime of entrepreneurial activities centred on mining.
The Queensland 400 is the State’s premier annual business event, with Queensland’s leading business owners and managers attending to witness the unveiling of the much-anticipated 2009 Queensland 400 list of the State’s largest privately held companies.
