A re-elected Coalition government will provide banking services at an additional 266 licensed Post Offices, mainly in rural and remote Australia, Deputy PM John Anderson says.
The Nationals leader says the extension of the giroPost system, which was extended to handle business banking in 1999, will increase the number of transactions undertaken by 2,500 a year, up from 12,000 now.
"As a result of our policy, the many rural and isolated communities served by these outlets will have access to key personal and business banking services," he says.
The Coalition's Bank@Post policy will cost $9.7 million over four years, including $5.3 million to install the equipment, funding f9or maintenance and subsidies to cover the transaction shortfall costs incurred by the small outlets. The banking services will be provided at no cost to the licensed Post Offices (LPOs).
