A Kingaroy man will have to serve a minimum of 15 months jail for attempted GST fraud after being convicted yesterday. Kevin Thompson, of Kingaroy, was sentenced to three and a half years jail and ordered to repay $104,852 to the Australian Taxation Office after being found guilty of two charges of defrauding the Commonwealth and one of attempting to defraud the Commonwealth in the Kingaroy District Court. Thompson claimed false GST refunds on Business Activity Statements submitted for his jewellery business between October and December 2000. Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody welcomed the sentence, saying courts take a dim view of attempts to defraud the tax system.
