More than half of Victorians surveyed by the Department of Consumer Affairs have experienced significant problems with a landlord or agent in the past 18 months, Minister for Consumer Affairs Christine Campbell says. With the snapshot survey indicating a range of concerns about rental issues, Campbell says the reviews will continue on a regular basis to ensure the government stays informed. "Out of renters who experienced problems, 76% of complaints were about repairs," she says. "This is a really frustrating issue for renters, as it makes their day-to-day lives very stressful. "We found 35% of those surveyed who were aware of their rights as renters, were not sure whether the laws protected them enough." The government is currently undertaking a publicity campaign to highlight renters' rights. Campbell says with just under a quarter of all Victorian households being rented, it is vital people are aware of their rights. "We also found that 71% of those who were aware of the laws that protect renters had received a copy of either the Renters Magazine or the Statement of Rights and Duties," she says. "This shows that the Renters Magazine is an invaluable resource for renters across the state, informing them of residential tenancy laws. "Landlords and agents must always give a copy of the Statement of Rights and Duties to tenants on or before the day they move in. There can be a fine of $500 for not doing so." Renters Magazine is available by telephoning Consumer Affairs Victoria on 1300 55 81 81 or visit their website.
