Australian Tax Office (ATO) call centres will be open tomorrow to help businesses lodge their next quarterly statements in time.
With the February 28 deadline for lodging their next quarterly Business Activity Statements (BAS) or Installment Activity Statement (IAS) fast approaching, Commissioner Michael Carmody says call centres will be open from 9am to 5pm tomorrow.
"We want to give people every opportunity to lodge on time before late lodgement penalties apply more broadly from the first activity statements due for the new financial year," Carmody says.
"We are currently writing to people behind with their lodgements to help them tidy up their books as we don't want to see anyone face late lodgement penalties.
"Penalties will not be applied for one-off or isolated circumstances.
"However, in order to deliver the integrity promised with The New Tax System, we are moving into a new bedding-phase where penalties will apply more broadly.
"I recognise that even with the best intentions, events will arise that mean people will not always get it right. People genuinely doing the right thing will not be penalised for isolated slip-ups."
