A 10-year information and communications technology (ICT) plan will make Victoria a hotspot for the industry, a government minister says.
Minister for State and Regional Development John Brumby launched the
Gorwing Tomorrow's Industries Today plan which outlines strategies for the state for the next 10 years.
Brumby says the industry could reach $1.5 billion a year in ICT industry exports by 2010.
The key initiatives of the plan are:
- to develop the Next Wave Program, which identifies and develops emerging ICT clusters
- to establish Team Victoria, which aims to build on software engineering skills by developing teams of companies to target domestic and off-shore growth opportunities
- to establish a new chip testing facility to support growth of the microelectronics industry
- develop new intellectual property framework to help commericalise publicly funded research and development (R&D)
- to increase the number and success rate of Victorian start-up companies
- to expand the Vic IT database, an information resource on the Victorian ICT industry
- to ensure the importance of ICT industry trade and employment to the Victorian economy exceeds international benchmarks.
